PHA Training: Detecting and Addressing Hazards from Mold
This self-directed training has been developed to inform public housing agencies (PHAs) and staff of the importance of early mold detection, causes, health concerns and remediation procedures in housing units and common areas. This training covers six topics: types of mold, causes of mold growth, health concerns associated with mold, types of mold assessment, mold remediation, and managing risk.

This presentation describes some common molds and provides examples and explanations of the various types of mold.
Topic 2: Mold Causes and Growth Conditions
This presentation provides examples of environments in which mold develops, and factors affecting the growth of mold in buildings.
Topic 3: Health Concerns
This presentation discusses health concerns associated with mold, as it is important to be aware of the current scientific knowledge of the effects mold can have on human beings.
Topic 4: Types of Assessment
This presentation discusses the difference between an intrusive and non-intrusive assessment and what you should look for when doing your assessment.
Topic 5: Remediation
This presentation discusses mold remediation and specialized activities typically performed by a third party, not PHA staff. However, it is useful to know a little bit about what services your third party will bring to the agency.
Topic 6: Prevention and Managing Risk
This presentation discusses preventing and managing risk from mold, guidance on different methods to control or prevent mold growth, and certain myths concerning mold prevention and cleaning.
