NFHTA Basics of Fair Housing - May 2022

The Basics of Fair Housing course ensures that FHIP and FHAP participants have a foundational framework, which they can build upon to carry out their duties in a professional and proficient manner.

Course Objectives

After completing the course, participants will:

  • Describe and discuss significant events in the history of Housing Discrimination
  • List the basic provisions of the Federal Fair Housing Act and its implementing regulations
  • Explain the roles and responsibilities of fair housing organizations, including Fair Housing Initiative Programs (FHIP) and Fair Housing Assistance Programs (FHAP)
  • List similar organizations and network with peers to share experiences and information

You will receive an enrollment notification within 1-2 weeks of the course start date notifying if your request was approved, waitlisted, or declined.

If approved to attend the course, you will receive an email from the NFHTA Registrar inviting you to complete Step 2 of the registration process.

Eligibility Criteria

Role and Experience

  • Be currently employed by a FHIP or FHAP
  • Have less than 2 years of experience working in fair housing

Participant Expectations

  • Attend all 4 classes
  • Complete the pre-work and homework
  • Actively participate in the training by embracing new learning and skills and building relationships with others

Attendees Allowed Per Agency

Seats in Academy courses are extremely limited and reserved on a first come, first served basis.

Due to limited capacity, only one staff member per agency is permitted to attend this course. Please coordinate with other staff members at your agency, and select a single person to submit a registration request.

What to Expect

Time Commitment

The total time commitment for this course is 16 hours, which includes 12 hours of virtual instructor-led course via Zoom and 4 hours of homework. Participants must attend all 4 days of the course to receive a certificate of completion.

Participants are invited to attend office hours 30 minutes before and after course instruction each day of the course.

Course Format

This course is conducted in an virtual interactive format via Zoom that includes lecture-style teaching along with breakout groups to encourage further discussion. Participants are encouraged to use their webcam during this course.

NFHTA provides knowledge, skill, and capacity building opportunities necessary to end housing discrimination in all its forms. The Academy features virtual and in-person courses and resources for FHIP and FHAP staff of all experience levels.
