Pursuing energy efficiency can relieve households of heavy cost burdens while also improving a home’s safety and comfort. Across the country, housing counselors play a key role in helping consumers achieve energy savings goals! In partnership with the Department of Energy (DOE), HUD’s Office of Housing Counseling (OHC) is sponsoring the Housing Counseling Energy Efficiency Essentials Series.
This training series offers easy recommendations for renters and homeowners to realize immediate energy cost savings. Counselors will also walk away with concrete information about improvements that homeowners can make to reduce energy costs over time. Experts in the field will break down home energy assessments, which counselors can use as a tool to help clients identify the most impactful energy saving investments for their home. Finally, the series will orient counselors to resources for consumers, from financial incentives to loan products to local utility benefit programs.
Training Objectives:
Participants will learn:
- How renters and homeowners can lower energy costs by making energy efficient adjustments and improvements
- What a home energy assessment is and how consumers can obtain one
- Where to go to access local, regional, and national resources that support clients in funding and realizing cost saving improvements
- Insights and advice on growing energy efficiency knowledge and offerings at your agency

Benefits and Basics of Energy Efficiency and Home Energy Assessments | Housing counselors will learn about the key role of energy efficiency in boosting housing affordability and improving health, safety, and comfort. In addition, experts in the field will equip counselors with the latest information about energy saving actions, adjustments, and improvements for both renters and homeowners. Attendees will also find out how to use a home energy assessment to help clients make informed decisions about energy efficiency activities. Training Objectives Participants will learn about:

Incentives and Resources to Make Energy Efficiency a Reality | Housing counselors will learn about incentive programs, loan products, rebates, and other resources to help renters, homebuyers, and homeowners achieve cost savings and build wealth through energy efficiency. Experts from DOE will guide housing counselors in navigating federal, state and local programs in their region, including forthcoming 2022 Inflation Reduction Act initiatives. Attendees will gain a concrete understanding of how housing counseling clients can take advantage of these resources through case studies. Training Objectives Participants will learn about:
