Housing Counseling 2021 Conference: Certification Update and A Conversation with the OHC Directors

During this session of the 2021 Office of Housing Counseling (OHC) Community Conference, the Deputy Assistant Secretary (DAS) David Berenbaum updated housing counseling agencies on the status of counselor certification. The conference continued with a round-table conversation with the Directors of OHC's three offices: Policy and Grant Administration, Outreach and Capacity Building, and Oversight and Accountability. The Directors provided insights and updates on topics that are top of mind for housing counseling agencies.

Certification Session Speakers:

  • David Berenbaum, Deputy Assistant Secretary, HUD's Office of Housing Counseling: David Berenbaum serves as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Housing Counseling at the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development. As a member of the Senior Executive Service, Mr. Berenbaum collaborates with HUD's leadership, professional staff, and partners to provide the high impact services to ensure that every American has a place to call home and the ability to achieve their financial dreams. David brings leadership and program experience to the Office of Housing Counseling and to the issues of fair, affordable & sustainable housing and related public and private sector housing counseling initiatives.

Director Conversation Facilitator:

  • Danberry Carmon, Associate Deputy Assistant Secretary, HUD's Office of Housing Counseling: Danberry Carmon is currently the Associate Deputy Assistant Secretary for HUD's Office of Housing Counseling. He previously served as the HUD New Orleans Field Office Director and the HUD Field Office Director for the Wyoming State Office. Danberry also formerly served as Supervisory Housing Program Specialist in Fort Worth, Texas, Region VI. Serving as a Multifamily Construction Analyst in the Production Department in Fort Worth was his first role with HUD.

  • Brian Siebenlist, Director, Office of Policy and Grant Administration, HUD's Office of Housing Counseling: Brian Siebenlist is the Director of the Office of Policy and Grant Administration in HUD's Office of Housing Counseling.
  • Jerrold H. Mayer, Director, Office of Outreach and Capacity Building, HUD's Office of Housing Counseling: Jerrold H. Mayer is currently the Director of the Office of Outreach and Capacity Building in HUD's Office of Housing Counseling. The Mission of the Office of Outreach and Capacity Building is to train and certify housing counselors and increase public awareness of HUD's housing counseling programs to enable all families to access safe, healthy, and affordable housing. Jerry has worked for HUD in FHA Insured mortgage, housing counseling, and nonprofit programs.
  • Kisha Wright, Director, Office of Oversight and Accountability, HUD's Office of Housing Counseling: Kisha Wright is the Director for HUD's Office of Oversight and Accountability within the Office of Housing Counseling.
  • Phyllis Ford, Deputy Director, Office of Oversight and Accountability, HUD's Office of Housing Counseling: Phyllis H. Ford is the Deputy Director of Oversight and Accountability in HUD's Office of Housing Counseling. Phyllis has worked for HUD supporting rehabilitation programs, managing housing counseling agencies, providing compliance monitoring, technical assistance, and training.
