Fundamentals of Fair Housing - Intake


The Fundamentals of Fair Housing - Intake course covers best practices in fair housing intake for FHIP and FHAP staff. This course will provide an overview of the responsibilities and customer service orientation to conducting intake. Participants will learn how to conduct interviews, including conducting exercises on the do's and don'ts of interviewing techniques, and learn how to establish jurisdiction and apply lessons in drafting timely complaints.

Course Objectives

After completing the course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand how to conduct fair housing intakes within statutory and regulatory requirements
  • Learn about and practice strategies for face-to-face and remote intakes, including providing reasonable accommodations.
  • Learn how to apply customer service best practices when working with aggrieved persons, including sharing lessons learned amongst peers in response to various scenarios.
  • Learn how to draft complaints in a timely, accurate manner, and make appropriate referrals.
  • Meet and connect with peers from other organizations to share experiences and establish connections.

Eligibility Criteria

Role and Experience:

  • Be currently employed by a FHIP or FHAP, with less than 3 years of experience working in fair housing
  • Support intake activities with a FHIP or FHAP
  • Have completed NFHTA's Basics of Fair Housing OR be familiar with the Basics of Fair Housing Learning Objectives.

Commitment: Participants must agree to:

  • Attend all 4 classes
  • Complete the pre-work and homework
  • Actively participate in the training by embracing new learning and skills and building relationships with others

Attendees Allowed Per Agency

Due to limited capacity, only one staff member per agency is permitted to attend this course. Please coordinate with other staff members at your agency, and select a single person to submit a registration request.

Time commitment of 16 hours, which includes 12 hours of virtual instructor-led course and 4 hours of homework.

Participants must attend all 4 days of the course to receive a certificate of completion.
