This course ensures that FHIP and FHAP participants have a foundational framework, which they can build upon to carry out their duties in a professional and proficient manner.

After completing the course, participants will be able to:

• Describe and discuss significant events in the history of housing discrimination
• List the basic provisions of the Federal Fair Housing Act and its implementing regulations
• Explain the roles and responsibilities of fair housing organizations, including FHIPs and FHAPs
• List similar organizations and network with peers to share experiences and information

This course covers best practices in fair housing intake for FHIP and FHAP staff. This course also provides an overview of the responsibilities and customer service orientation to conducting intake. Participants will learn how to conduct interviews, including conducting exercises on the do's and don'ts of interviewing techniques, and learn how to establish jurisdiction and apply lessons in drafting timely complaints.

After completing the course, participants will be able to:

• Describe how to conduct fair housing intakes within statutory and regulatory requirements
• Cite strategies for face-to-face and remote intakes, including addressing reasonable accommodations
• Describe how to apply a customer service orientation to working with aggrieved persons, including examples of lessons from peers in response to various scenarios
• Outline how to draft complaints in a timely manner and make appropriate referrals
• List similar organizations and network with peers to share experiences and information

This course is designed to ensure that FHAP intake officers and investigators have a basic framework, which they can build upon to carry out their duties in a timely, efficient, professional, and proficient manner.

After completing the course, participants will be able to:

• Describe the key steps involved in how to plan case investigations
• Identify and apply applicable elements of proof as the framework to investigate a case
• Describe techniques for gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses
• Describe how to develop final investigative reports and drafts of determinations

The Litigating Fair Housing Cases virtual course is designed for those who are involved in FHIP and FHAP litigation to understand and apply the methods and strategies for effective fair housing enforcement. Topics to be presented include pre-cause/pre-litigation case analysis, transitioning from investigation to litigation, prompt judicial action and injunctive relief, discovery, damages and attorney fees, pre-trial preparation, post-filing conciliation, motion practice, and trials.

After completing the course, participants will be able to:

• Understand how the methods and strategies for effective fair housing enforcement
• Learn the benefits of counsel’s pre-filing involvement in fair housing cases and how to transition from investigation to enforcement
• Apply applicable theories of liability and proof elements to determine reasonable cause and to develop an systemic, comprehensive method for conducting discovery and engaging in trial preparation
• Hear from experts on how to handle cases from the time of a charge/court complaint through the nuts and bolts of litigation to its completion
• Learn time saving techniques in litigating cases, as well as guidance and strategies from experts and peers
