What if I find out later that the person’s answer differs from their actual veteran status? For example, if they provide military service documentation for another project after telling me they’re not a veteran?

You should always correct inaccurate information in HMIS. An HMIS should only have one record of Veteran Status for each client, just as there should only be one record of a client’s Social Security Number or date of birth, and the responsibility for ensuring data quality for these data elements is shared by all projects that serve them. This means that if you enter ‘No’ for Veteran Status and the client later provides documentation of military service to another project, they will – or should – make a correction to the information that you entered.
