Q

Asking about race and ethnicity confuses clients. Can I give a default answer like saying that all Hispanic/Latino people are White unless they say otherwise?

A

No, you must select the race or races and ethnicity that a client reports. It is important to ask about all household members’ race and identity because it is impossible to tell just based on a person’s appearance or name. For example, there are Latinos and American Indians with light colored hair or skin, Cubans of African descent, and people with last names that don’t sound Hispanic.
