Note: This FAQ relates to HMIS, HDX

My community has fully implemented the most recent HMIS data standards, but HUD guidance shows that the 2017 AHAR reporting categories have not changed, except for Age. What do we need to do in order to ensure we submit the AHAR data correctly?

The 2017 AHAR is based on the 2010 HMIS data standards. To help communities report their data accurately, the AHAR team developed a crosswalk that maps the reporting categories from the new data standards to the 2010 standards. The crosswalk is called the AHAR Data Mapping Instructions.

A few data elements in particular were modified when the data standards were updated, and the AHAR Data Mapping Instructions provides guidance about each:

  • Age
  • Gender
  • Disability Status
  • Living Arrangement the Night Before Program Entry
  • Destination

Communities should request help from their HMIS vendors if they have further questions related to this issue. Members of the AHAR team can also assist.
